Purpose: The Accelerated Reader program is used to motivate, monitor, and track growth of students' independent reading skills.
Goals: -Point goals are individualized for students and calculated based on the iReady Grade Equivalency score. Goals are reviewed and adjusted as necessary each nine weeks to reflect growth. The chart below is a loose guideline for this, but ultimately ELA teachers work directly with students to form a reasonable goal which also challenge them to improve.
|Grade Equivalency||Points per 9 weeks|
|11.0 & up||22.7|
-Accuracy measures student reading comprehension. Every student's accuracy goal is set at the suggested standard of 85%. -Students earn each by taking AR quizzes for each AR book read, fiction or nonfiction. Points/accuracy are awarded on quiz performance.
Grading policy -AR is a graded component of the ELA course which is broken down for each nine-weeks as follows: 60% Assessment 34% Classwork 6% AR -Within the AR category are two assignments: Accuracy for 100 points and point goal for 50 points -Students may earn bonus points for going above their goal ONLY if they have met their accuracy goal. For every 25% above the points goal, students will earn 5 bonus points (up to 20 points). This will be added to the point goal grade. -At progress report time, students with zero AR points will have two zeroes entered into the grade book. This only means to serve as an indicator of no progress at the time of progress reports. This is not the final grade, but this will not be updated again until the final grade at the end of the nine weeks. If any progress has been made, then the grade will remain blank until the end of the nine weeks. Once a student with a zero passes a test, the zero can be removed. Progress does not indicated that the full goal has been achieved. To ensure your are tracking the most current AR progress of your student, you should utilize the Renaissance Home Connect portal.
Grade Calculation -Accuracy grade is calculated into the 100 point grade. -ie. 80/85 accuracy = 94/100 in the accuracy grade -Point goal grade is calculated into the 50 point grade. -ie 10/15 = 66%--divided by 2 to be entered at 33/50
Deadlines -AR deadlines are set by CMS for each nine weeks. -Deadline 1: Friday, 10/2/20 -Deadline 3: Friday, 3/12/21 -Deadline 2: Friday, 12/11/20 -Deadline 4: Friday, 5/7/21
AR Stars Rewards -Students who meet BOTH their points and accuracy goals are eligible to receive the AR stars reward each nine weeks.
Best Practices -Students should participate in a daily minimum of 15 minutes of silent, sustained reading. This is the basis of our reading growth plan and is typically incorporated into class time, however, outside reading is strongly encouraged, especially in the case of absence from school. -ELA teachers coordinate a method of tracking progress with students and regularly connect with students about what they are reading, which allows opportunities to gauge student comprehension and evaluate progress.
For Virtual Students -Policies are the same as above except: Quizzing -Virtual students are required to take AR quizzes at school. Students must schedule appointments to do so at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d48a9ab2ca5fbc25-virtual and report to school at the schedule time. -In extreme and unusual circumstances, an alternative plan may be made, but this will be on a case by case basis.
